Intermediate| Play Therapy Skills and Methods, Play Therapy Special Topics
This training is experiential and didactic. This workshop is grounded in Integrative Play Therapy, including CCCPT, Adlerian Play Therapy, and Internal Family Systems. Participants will examine the protective systems in superheroes and villains. Through an IFS-informed play therapy lens, participants will develop an understanding of how to externalize and use metaphors with our adolescent clients. Using characters in movies as examples, participants will be able to recognize the concepts of IFS-informed play therapy and how to integrate them into their practice.
After the session, participants will be able to:
-
Analyze the theories of Adlerian, child-centered Play Therapy, and Internal Family Systems as they relate to the idea of protective systems explored through the superhero and villain lens.
-
Demonstrate basic understanding of internal family systems and the integration in play therapy.
-
Demonstrate three play therapy techniques that can be combined with IFS to explore the adolescent’s protective systems.

Description
Adolescence is a time of internal complexity, identity shifts, and emotional intensity. making it a powerful lifecycle stage for parts work. This 3-hour virtual workshop explores how to integrate Internal Family Systems (IFS) with playful, expressive, and relational approaches to support adolescents in identifying, understanding, and healing their internal systems. Participants will learn how to adapt IFS for adolescent clients using creative tools such as metaphor, journaling, sandtray, art, music, movement, and digital storytelling. The session will also address the unique developmental needs of teens, common protective strategies, and how to build trust with skeptical or shut-down parts. Participants will be introduced to practical strategies for helping adolescents build emotional regulation, increase self-energy, and unburden shame and trauma through creative, non-pathologizing interventions.
